My husband received orders that we are pcs-ing to 29 in October. He is an E6 and we have 1 child. We are currently in MI. I called housing yesterday and was told that there is a 3-6 month wait for housing. We cannot get on the list until he checks out here. Any suggestions on temp housing? Any suggestions when it comes to base housing? Thanks :)

SuzieHomemakerEnviesMe --- 13 years ago -

all your housing questions/pictures/rentals out in town can be answered here usmc 29 palms

kElJoY --- 13 years ago -

You are supposed to wait for any unnecessary drama to commence before you disperse actual info!!! No fun!!! Kinda like how the cops do.

lol

Belle --- 13 years ago -

I'm not aware of temp housing around here. You may have to rent a house out in town for a 6 month lease unless you can find a landlord willing to do a month-to-month lease. Those types of places are hard to find.

I have an E6 friend and they live in Joshua Heights on base. That is a newly built neighborhood. The unit is nice, but it is small. However, I think all of the housing units on base are small.

If your child is preschool age or younger, I suggest Knott Sky Preschool out in town. The base CDC is more of a paid daily playmate; there is no curriculum.

If you live on base and your child is school aged, your choice of elementary schools are 29 Elem or Condor Elem. There are no DoD schools here.

Lastly, unless you are willing to spend 493837366 bucs on gas a week, live in 29 Palms. The drive from the closest towns, Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley, will rape your wallet!

Interesting! I'll have to ask friends that attend the CDC and ask them what they meant when they said "there is no curriculum there"! Ibhave heard from numerous people who all say their children spent nearly every day just playing. In fact, I was just talking to our COs wife today who said she pulled out her children b/c of this same reason.

Either way, Knott Sky Park Preschool is exceptional!!! You just need to make sure you're on the wait list 1 year out. It's THAT good!

Ms. Karen is the best!

LOL. That just doesn't sound like a bad thing.

Mari (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

So...question. What is the new construction in 801 (Two Mile)? New housing or clubhouse or something?

IWearHisRank --- 13 years ago -

clubhouse

Thats what I heard.

Oh good, it looks to be a good size, right up on the hill.

Belle --- 13 years ago -

I hope it is a gym. If it is, I hope those of us that are military and DO NOT live in housing can use it! I hate spending so much on fuel just to drive to the base gym.

There is a meeting with BGen Smith coming up in about a week and that is one of the suggestions I am making.

The creative curriculum is based on children learning through play. You would be surprised at how much paperwork/time/energy we do/put in to make sure all the children are hitting all their benchmarks according to their age. It's way more detailed than what most parents think and children really can learn alot through playing.

hitgirl --- 13 years ago -

Creative Curriculum rocks! As far as curriculums go, I think it's one of the best one out there. It works with the child's natural developmental stages. I totally get how some may not think it's "learning" but it certainly is. I love, love, LOVE the CDCs my daughter has gone to. :)

hitgirl --- 13 years ago -

P.S. FCC providers also use Creative Curriculum. At least they're supposed to. I was an FCC provider for years when my kids were little and this curriculum was easily incorporated into the home environment as well.

No doubt.

OMG people!! There's a TON there in 29, it's called squatting. Lots of nice places to do it, FOR FREE, yes you heard right, FREE!

mplskaj --- 13 years ago -

I haven't been on here in forever, but saw your post and thought I'd try and help out. When we moved here we rented an apartment on a month-to-month basis and it worked out great for us. (we were also told it would be a 3-6 month wait and it ended up being just over 2 months) Smoke Tree Villas is the name of the complex we lived in...it's nice enough and well worth it for not having to sign a 6-month lease.

Maybe I've just always lived in really small places, but I don't consider our over 1700 sq foot house small at all! We live in the new(est) housing on base, Copper Canyon, and we're really happy here!

Depending on how old your child is there are options. I have a 4-year-old that goes to the preschool at the CDC on base and is thriving in that "playful" environment. The curriculum they use there is great, I think!

Lastly, make the best of it here...it's all about attitude! I hear people complain ALL the time about being stuck here, but it's all about what you make of it! There are good people here (they just are often overshadowed by the ridiculously dramatic ones) and decent things to do if you're willing to take the time!

Best of luck to you and your family on your move!

BoxTopHero --- 13 years ago -

You could always keep an eye on bookoo.com and see if there are the random sporadic places that accept month to month. Sure it might be in Joshua Tree or Yucca but its temporary and usually well below your 1100 dollar BAH.
Ive seen some before and I usually broadcast them to the people I know who are PSCing here.

Where in the mitten are you? Why are you in MI!?

LambChops --- 13 years ago -

Thank you for all of the responses. This is going to be a tough move with our dog, cat and baby. He is 6 months old this week. We are in MI now because my husband is stationed at a joint reserve base here. We were able to choose this 3 years ago when we left Pendleton to be close to family. We have been spoiled! 29 Palms will be an adjustment but an adventure as well! I really hope to get on base quickly :)

LambChops --- 13 years ago -

Also, we are in SE Michigan. He is working out of Selfridge ANG

BoxTopHero --- 13 years ago -

I'm from NW MI. You'll love it here, especially if you live on a dirt road and have seen a porta potty in the last year.

Good bye streams and lakes, hello dry river beds and desert. (and 100+ degrees.)
