Hi-Desert residents and motorists are alerted to be on the lookout for marathon bike racers and their attendant entourage this Sunday, Oct. 9, as the Furnace Creek 508 Bicycle Race heads for the finish line in Twentynine Palms. The 28th anniversary ultra-cycling marathon begins Saturday in Santa Clarita, and stretches 508 miles across the Mojave Desert, through Death Valley National Park and Mojave National Preserve, finishing in Twentynine Palms. The first racers are expected to finish about 9 a.m. on Sunday. The cutoff time is 7 a.m. Monday, the 10th. Racers and their support teams are expected to enter the city from the northeast on Amboy Road, turn south on Utah Trail, then turn west onto the highway and ride through downtown to the finish line at Best Western Gardens Hotel, 71487 29 Palms Highway. Residents are encouraged to welcome the racers as they pass through on Sunday, Oct. 9. An official City welcome will also be given to the racing teams by Twentynine Palms Mayor Jim Harris and City Manager Richard Warne at a post-race breakfast Monday morning hosted by the sponsoring organization Adventure CORPS.
