My marine has heard some horror stories about home/auto burglaries and break-ins while living off base. But I dont know if these rumors pertain specifically to 801 or the other off base communities not part of 801 housing. I need your insight. Thx! And also is the 801 a gated community?

These things happen everywhere. Some areas are better than other's.

Sort of...they are working on that. However to be honest they've been "working on that" for a while now.
Also to be fair I have heard of a few car break-in's on base as well but mostly cars that weren't locked and who left their wallet/purse in view...a little more then stupid even on a military base.
Leaving your purse/wallet in the car is just dumb! The gate will be a code to access entry, I dont call it secure but I guess better than nothing??? I think it will give people a false sense of security. As does living onbase. I hear abt the breakins from alot of co workers. However, I think they happen anywhere. Just be mindful, lock cars and homes. Maybe get a dog or 2.
Someone tried to say base was so much more safe than town. I laughed at them. Same stuff happens on base as out in town....on a daily basis.
It really is safer though because unlike town you can't just stroll in. If things happen on base it's because of people who live here, not because of random meth addicts and what not. So actually there is a difference. I hated living out in town many years ago and would never do it again.
Thanks everyone! :) Are you able to take a look around the house offered to you before you make a decision to accept or deny it?
Yes but you only get like 3 chances to accept a house before you have to back on the waiting list. The issue is, if you turn down a house the next one they offer you could be on the same street or same neighborhood. It all depends on rank as to where you can live. Some houses are nice and some are old and outdated.
I live in 801. I enjoy it, but others don't. The gates are completely finished, they just haven't started using them yet because the construction for pools and clubhouse isn't done. Joe Davis pool is almost complete, but the Two Mile/Aztec pool ran into some piping issues and is taking longer. So until that one is finished, and all the people over there don't have to use the JD pool, they'll leave the gates open. Here, it depends on what unit you get as to whether you'll like it...we have a 3 bdrm, fully renovated unit and its stellar. But the older ones look kinda 90s to me. lol
Thank you very much. My husband is adamant about NOT living off base. I think because he is infantry and spends a good amount of time in the field. And we have a baby on the way. I would like to hear more GOOD things about 801. thanks for sharing :)
Ok, Ill check it out after i get to 29 palms. Thanks for the heads up. I often wondered about domestic abuse being more or less prevalent in the military especially among families that are deployed. Especially since Ive seen significant changes in my husband since his first tour to middle east.
Like I said, I've never had any problems, but I know other people have. I think some of it is just paranoia at being alone ("there's guys with orange cones driving around in a truck!" with massive construction going on...), but there's definitely some craziness out here. However, as far as break-ins and such, recently housing on base had a string of auto break-ins, so it's not just limited to here. Anyone can hop the bus and come right on in to base, and at a class recently I was told about a recent drill where they attempted to "assassinate the general." It was successful...and no one saw a thing. In broad daylight. By the golf course. So, it just depends, I think.
Only major problem with 801 is that now PMO doesn't have jurisdiction, so it's strictly sheriff's office out here, and their response time leaves something to be desired. PMO only comes out when it has to do with the Marines living here.
But, no matter what housing you choose, be prepared to see lots of animal abuse and neglect.
stayed in 801 for a year..no bueno..would have had a better chance out in town, but everyone's situation is different you have to see for yourself..I think lincoln put out a hit on our family...kidding of course, but we live on base now and love it..

How did you manage to move on base after living in 801
They are not bad, we have lived in 801 for 2 years and after we moved in they started renovating we got an older one and its really not bad at all.

The PMO thing, it has been that way for while, over a year now, actually since we have lived here so about 2 years.
We have never had problems here, the only problem I have are some of the neighbors are rude and like to blast their car music at ALL hours and I think it is rude seeing as it's a complex and EVERYONE can hear it. Other than that 801 is not so bad.
I think its like after 6 months you are able to request on base housing after living in 801.
I wish this was true. We have tried twice and they told us no both times because we have a 3 bedroom. we only have 1 child on the way so we have more than enough space. When you put in a transfer request to try and move on base though, it is the governments choice weather you move or not. They are the ones that approve or deny the request, so it's not like management of 801 is picking certain people it's the government.
