A power outage in the local area has affected nearly 4,000 homes. Due to unseasonal weather, a temporary cooling center is being established aboard the Combat Center in the West Gym, for residents of Vista Del Sol affected by the outage. The center will be open starting at 6 p.m. Residents will be allowed to stay overnight on military cots if the outage continues through the night.

Due to the temporary nature of the shelter and potentially short duration outage, residents are asked to bring only essential comfort items such as sheets, pillows and simple entertainment items.

The Provost Marshal's Office will increase security patrols in the Vista Del Sol housing area so residents will not be allowed to bring food or pets into the cooling center. Residents are encouraged to better protect their food with locally-purchased ice, and to leave out extra food and water for their pets if they plan to stay at the cooling center overnight.

Thank you! We've been lurking for a while. No real excuse why we haven't taken the next logical step and set up an account. Hopefully it creates one more avenue for people to get the straight scoop from the base. As someone who is highly allergic to cats, I really appreciate the no pets rule.

I don't even need the cat to be around; just going inside a house where a cat has been, and I start having breathing problems. I took allergy shots weekly for years in the early 2000s, apparently didn't do me any good :) 

Whereas I feel bad for all the animals who will be stuck in the heat, I understand why they don't allow pets in the cooling facility. I'm glad they have it for those who have medical problems and have trouble coping with the heat. 

There is a good discussion about this going on on the Combat Center Facebook page. The quickand dirty is that we plan for care and sheltering of pets for full-on disaster situations. But since the power company was telling us they thought power would be restored last night or today, we weren't going to invest the money to set up the shelter in case power came back on as soon as we were finished. It's something we plan for because we know how important pets are to their families. -NCM
