Hello everyone! We are moving to 29 palms. I would like to get some info and suggestions for housing. It is for my E5 husband and I. Here are some questions:

1.Any difference between base and in-town housing?
2.Does base housing give back reimbursement?
3.Is their anyone I can reach for intown 29 apartment rent?
4.What kind of A/C system is efficient.
5.How is the weather in the winter and do you need to use heater?

Please let me know if we need to be aware of anything. Thank you so much for your help. 

I personally feel a heater is necessary during the winter, it gets pretty cold at night. I think ac is better at cooling and keeping cool, however swamp coolers tend to be cheaper but not as effective at keeping cold.

I would assume any realty place would be able to help find a place in town if you chose to go that route, I wouldn't in a million yearshowever.

To my knowledge there is no payback of bah if living in base housing. 

DAZ, WHEN you move to 29Palms the requirement is to tell or get other people to move out here that I might need as new neighbors !! lol 

What you got against living off base??

Swamp coolers work if used properly. I think people get a little too spoiled by a/c.

on base vs off base housing is a personal preference..I love my house on base, but I have friends that do great out in town and have great homes.

I like my imaginary home on Base since I can deco it anyway I like at a moment's whim .

Yes. You don't have a community swimming pool off Base that is free.

You mean to rent something short term?

4.What kind of A/C system is efficient.
Swamp or Master Coolers are the most efficient for the desert climate. NOT the refrigerated air that most are more familiar with - that takes a lot of electric $$$.

5.How is the weather in the winter and do you need to use heater? Mostly mild - cold at night and in the mornings...beautiful warm days. And yes, you would want a heater for the really cold morning and nights.  

I have both A/C and swamp cooler, and I always use the A/C.

The swamp cooler isn't ducted throughout the house; that was the mistake I made when picking a place to rent. I have a friend whose swamp cooler is ducted into every room and its quite nice; mine only cools the living room.

My house is very well insulated so the electrical costs in the summer aren't that ridiculous. It also means I rarely turn on the furnace in the winter. A programmable thermostat helps cut down costs too.

Keep the shades drawn in the summer, and you might consider some window tinting. I have it up in one room that really gets the sun in the evening.

Base has a lot of drama, as well as 801 Housing. If you dont like drama rent something out in town.

Efficient system is a swamp cooler, but does not work on humid days, Matercool is the shizz, A/C is expensive.

Very chilly, definately us heater, not all the time, just the nights that get below 30 degrees. 

I don't get the whole base housing equals drama thing. We have lived here since December and have yet to witness any drama. Maybe because we don't seek it out and we mind our own business. Drama follows those who either can't stay out of others business or who specifically search it out.

I know that's why I don't turn my ac on. Lol I don't wanna get used to it or pay that hefty bill. :-)
I did have to use the ac on some nights do the kiddos could get comfortable.

I live in town. I like my quiet neighborhood. There are many things I like, especially not living right on top of other people.

I have no idea about reimbursements.

Phone books and google will have all of that info. Check out AHRN.com and keep an eye on Bookoo as well.

We use the heater in the winter and I have a swamp cooler in the summer. With black out curtains and proper use, the swamp cooler works great. 

Go to usmclife.com. You can see outside pictures of the housing areas. 801 is base housing, but its off base. I think there is a Facebook page with interior pictures.

This will be my first summer, but from what i hear it can get to roughly 120f. So hot, dry, and occasionally windy.

I am concerned about this summer though... such a mild winter makes me think it'll be a very warm summer :( 

How hot does it get in the summer?

I've been here for 120+...within the past 5 years....it gets freaking HOT!!!

Like having your head in an oven...on 500 degrees.

YES KJ the tigers and rhinos run amok here in town and people should carry a loaded elephant gun with them often ! Yep perils at each turn kind of like a real crazy Disney ride come to life !! 

HENCEForth when ye move to said location = 29palms ye shall check yeself at herein 'entrance' to thee city!! If ye hereby fail such necessary stuff thou shalt be hunted down ! And ye shalt be handed over to the 'mover's bootcamp' to be processed !
