Okay, so I wasn't trying to jack someone else's thread about housing, so I'll just start my own.
I'd still like to know what the problem is with 801, since every problem I've come across in previous threads isn't anything different than one would get in any other type of housing/apartment complex.
I'm not so stuck up that I will turn up my nose at the idea of living off base. It's a roof over my head that came months before anything on base would've been available. I was appalled when the housing office told my husband and I about the reactions some wives had to the suggestion of off base housing, as if it was an insult to them.
Basically, this seems like a select group of entitled prudes who have the idea that 801 is the housing for the social outcasts of Twentynine Palms. In which case, I will be perfectly happy to avoid breathing your precious air anywhere near you for the rest of my time here. Please forgive us plebes for having the audacity to take a perfectly good house when it's offered to us.
Not all of us had to wait 7-9 months for on base housing.
We weren't even offered 801 housing. If we had been, we would have turned it down flat. There is too much going on out there, no PMO without an emergency call, it's not secured (as of right now) which means the druggies and criminals of the town can AND DO just walk right in. There have been NUMEROUS break in's and vandalism of cars out there. No garages to park safely in. The complexes are a hassle, especially if you live on the back of one where there's no close parking.
The layout of the entire area is obnoxious. 8 million different entrances and all the looping around to find an address. Good luck finding a place after dark!
Does that sum it up for you? It's not ALWAYS a matter of "prudes" or feeling entitled. When the rank is high enough or you have patience, on base housing is the way to go.
At least here I'm basically at piece. I have a strong PMO presence. I have a large house that I don't have to walk around other people's places to get to. I have a grocery store (even though it's getting expensive), a fuel station, 2 PX's, restaurants and a nice playground just off my patio (7 feet away). I can basically walk or cycle to anywhere I choose and that saves a lot of fuel.So if you wonder why some people prefer base it's probably because it's so convenient.

Last I heard, that's what the wait was. We weren't offered it either until we went to the housing office to try and beg them to give us some kind of help...and a month later, we're in a house. The woman there looked terrified to even ask us if we wanted off-base housing.

The gates on base don't stop anyone from just walking in. My husband has spoken to many people who simply ride their ATVs or dirt bikes through the desert and onto base, avoiding the gates completely. PMO and the sheriff's dept constantly patrol here, I see both at all hours of the day and night.

Again...this is not much different than any other apartment complex...even gated ones. I've had my car broken into in a supposedly "low-crime" area, but I'm smart enough not to leave anything of value in my car, as well as having a security system on my stereo. And close parking? I am just glad to not have to walk up a steep hill and three flights of stairs just to get to my door.

Three entrances, maybe four, into Aztec and Two Mile, and one into Joe Davis. The pizza guy never has a problem finding our place. :)
As for everything on base, I am three miles away from it, and if I had a bicycle...would use that to get there. Except I'd be going there to shop for things, and a bicycle wouldn't do me any good then. :P Since they are building more pools, a new dog park, and a community center here, I have no reason to go onto base for those things.
While I know it isn't always a matter of prudes or feeling entitled...most of the time, it is. I wanted nothing more than somewhere to lay my head down at night, and I wasn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth. It's been relatively peaceful here aside from trying to dodge all the dog poo that irresponsible owners refuse to pick up...but again, how is that different from just about any other neighborhood?

Probably because they get paid to know their way around there. Seems you have to drive forever to get anywhere in there.

That might happen every once in a blue moon but what is more accessible a base covered in Gates/Guards or a housing complex out in the middle of town? If I were a thief, I'd take my chances with the complex instead of trying to trespass on gated government property.

Maybe not compared to apartments in the civilian world but compared to on base, it's a big difference. In my years living here, NONE of my neighbors cars or property have been stolen or damaged. I've had one yard decoration pushed down but we basically know the brat that did that. Not worth more than a few bucks though so no loss. That's the worst thing I can say about my neighborhood.
When the rank is high enough
Must be nice.
One day you might get it. It's quite nice. I earned my rank so I'm not going to apologize for getting a nice house on base and being glad I'm not living out there. I would never want to leave my wife alone in 801. Some of my Marines live there and I've had to go out there many times for them. It's a mess.
I recently posted a comment about Copper Canyon housing pictures and I did mention on one of my comments that I did not want 801 housing because it was not for me and I made sure I put I was happy for those who like it I meant no judgement what so ever. I believe this may have started this thread and I didn't mean for it to offend anyone. But I have pretty much the same views as Dexter states. I have 2 young kids and an 18 year old and I am very picky about where I live and I just did not like the things I had read and researched about living out in towm whether it is 801 or anywhere in certain areas. I agree that it is NOT always an issue of being prudes. And as far as rank, my husband served for 21 years and is still serving and has gone to Iraq many times so yes sometimes there is the feeling of entitlement and yes it is nice very very very nice and very much earned. Instead of being so negative and feeling so offended about this matter maybe you should have just posted a nicer comment stating how wonderful your area is and point out reason why you would recommend new comers to concider it which would be helpful for those who didn't even know it may be an option. Think about posting something that helps others instead of just posting such negativity.
I earned my rank so I'm not going to apologize for getting a nice house on base
Not trying to say you didn't or you should apologize for anything...what I'm saying is not everyone has been in long enough to get where you are. :P My hubby knows if anyone tries ANYTHING around my house...my stun gun and pepper spray are coming out, and I told housing the exact same thing.
I grew up living outside of a military base, in a town that would scoff at the amount of "crime" here. And the crime ON base was almost as bad as off base. My doors lock just as well as anyone else's, though I also lock them when I'm home as well, much to my husband's dismay when he tries to barge in the door coming home. :D
To say that you would prefer on base housing because you feel safer with PMO around is one thing...to say everything out here is garbage, no way in hell would you live here, etc etc, I feel, is another thing entirely. I have seen police respond to one incident out here since January.
I simply do not understand the attitude that comes with living out here, when it is just like living in any other town. Except, I imagine, less police chases through this neighborhood than my old one. :) Maybe I'm just tougher than others, I guess? Idk, just don't get it, and probably won't, since I'm the type that's just happy to have a house. Not gonna complain because it's three miles from base and doesn't have guards posted at every corner. No different than any apartment I've lived in, aside from being twenty times nicer.
JJO, this is something that has been concerning me for a while, and was not anything intended against you or the things you said in your post. On the contrary, I'm happy you simply said it wasn't for you, as that's all that is necessary to say. It's the mindless bashing of this place, which has been good for me and for others, and the attitude that I feel comes from people who DON'T live here, acting is if those of us who do are idiots.
Not everyone has the time, money, rank, and patience to wait months for on-base housing. Kudos to those of you who do. And I don't feel like those of us who made the decision to live out here should be made to feel as if we made a mistake, because I don't believe I did, and neither does my husband. He actually prefers living out here. And, especially after all this, I can say that I do as well.
To be fair, though. I have never had a problem with maintenance, the office, parking, getting to my unit, neighbors, rats, crackheads, criminals, and whatever else people have come up with to hate on this place about.
Maintenance has always been prompt, done their job well. The office is quick to make sure everything is done correctly. The neighbors have been incredibly welcoming. Aside from a strange FIL across the way that was visiting this week, no crackheads or criminals. No rats. We're getting gates, a community center with a gym, pools, and a new dog park. There are no garages, but if a criminal is experienced enough...trust me, a garage door isn't going to stop him.
Also, 29P Sheriff's Dept AND PMO patrol here regularly. So that's double the protection. I still don't get what the problem is.
I think...I'm not sure, but you might be interpreting humor for bashing. The humor comes from all the MANY MANY MANY previous threads and posts we have all read over the last going on 4 years made by MANY MANY MANY people who have lived in 801 Housing.
I have never had a problem with maintenance, the office, parking, getting to my unit, neighbors, rats, crackheads, criminals, and whatever else people have come up with to hate on this place about.
I am also in a lot of physical pain right now, and thus my temper is short...rather quit before I say something that could never be mistaken for humor. :)
IMO the biggest factor is there are no guard gates. I have heard they are adding them so after the pools, community center and guard gates, I feel peoples opinions may change. In LeJeune, I lived off mainside in TT and LOVED it. It was gated and had every ammenity the main base did, minus the traffic. :)
I can understand that lizi I have seen some nasty comments on that area and some that don't really need to be made unfortunately people are always gonna just be straight out nasty.
I know people will be nasty jjo, and it honestly wasn't directed toward you. You were at least nice about it. I admit I went a bit off the deep end here, as I said, my patience is barely there right now lol.
Perfect, the gates are up, we just need that keypad in place so we can finally start using them. :)
801 just plain scares me. I know crap can happen on base as well, we don't live in a protective little bubble. BUT all the horror stories come from 801. I dislike being in 801 at night. The freaks come out at night ;]
