Hi guys, so I'm not sure what happened but after dinner I had to double take at my dog. Her right eye was very swollen. No discharge, but the left top part of her right eye is very swollen. After more careful inspection she has a large bump on her lip on that same side, which is making her lip sag. She and I did collide earlier today and I remember turning around to make sure she was ok. She was wincing a bit on that same side, but this was 4-5 hours pre swelling. Any ideas for those who have more experience. Shes a 9 month old golden. She's actibg, eating and drinking fine and doing what I would consider normal scratching on her face. I'd appreciate any insight or info anyone can give. In worried and waiting for my husband to get off work so I can take her to the emergency vet if I need to.

Make an ice pack with a ziplock bag and set her in your lap with the ice bag on her boo boos.

I slammed my little dog ON ACCIDENT a couple of weeks ago and she wouldn't open her eye for 2 days. We kept icing it though and she got better.

"with a ball" I meant to add. We were playing ball and actually it was her fault for running into it!! Seriously. I'm jus sayin!! I felt so bad though. :(

I hope you doggie is doing okay - do the ice bag!!!

Thanks! I actually called the breeder we got her from since her symptoms got worse and the test of her face began to swell. The more I've researched I think she got stung or bit by something. Bee, spider, something like that. She is constantly with us so she didn't get into anything toxic. Plus it's so localized it just seems weird that Benadryl didn't help at all. She wouldn't rest with me in the living room since she's used to sleeping by the door, so as hard as it was to leave her side, I went about things normally so she would sleep, cause she has itched one of her eyes raw to bleeding. :( poor thing. I'll update in the morning. :-/

Sorry If that was scatterbrained. I'm stressed! I meant that it just seems weird that the Benadryl didn't help. In pretty convinced me running into her 9-10+ hours ago couldn't have caused her face to swell as it has. There's just no way. I thought that at first, but now i am thinking otherwise.

Oh gosh you have to do something to keep her from itching herself raw!!! Do you maybe have any neosporin you can put on it? Did you try the ice for the swelling?? Don't just let her itch especially if it is close to the eye that's dangerous!!

kElJoY --- 12 years ago -

Yes I would think the itching would indicate a bite of some kind too!

And if my phone corrects my "I'm" to "in" one more time I might throw it across the room. :-) sorry for the misspellings which may have caused confusion.

Maybe you can put some sort of anti-itch ointment on it and bandage her up where she can get it more raw!! Poor baby :(

No worries - I got what you were saying. :)

bandage her up where she can

CAN'T!!! Not can.... ugh...stupid edit.

DFamily --- 12 years ago -

For right now I'm leaving her be. If I disrupt her from her sleep she's itching like crazy. If I let her relax. She sleeps like a man, perfectly content and undisturbed by anything. It's not bleeding a ton, so that's the least of our problems at this point. Just bleeding a bit by the eye where it's swollen from her scratching. I'm more worried about the swelling spreading. However my husband was able to come home and take a look and he seems to think if it was life threatening she'd be showing physical signs of distress or it would have already happened, which is why we are staying put ( although me hesitantly).

Keep us updated!!

DFamily --- 12 years ago -

Well, my husband took her down to Indio which is apparently the closest emergency vet ( rediculous!!!!!!!) so probably 300 dollars later for the appointment and 100.00 later in gas we will know what's going on. Her entire face swelled up!!! I feel terrible for her!! If I knew how to add a picture of her current state I would.

awwww poor doggie!!

So after the vet couldn't give us any advice over the phone, he drove 1.5 hours down there and the same person that answered the phone told us from what she could see Dakota is fine, just had been bit by something...black widow, brown recluse or stung by a bee, which we have been seeing around here a good bit. They told us when we had given her 1/3 of Benadryl that had not been enough, only 1/3 what she needed. She actually needed 75mg and let my husband decide whether he wanted to see the dr anyways. We talked about it and he decided he was pretty confident in her confidence and explanation and came home. He stopped at Walmart on the way home and got her started on more Benadryl. The swelling seemed to have gone down a good bit, so we just have to keep up with the dosage they recommended every four hours. I hope this info is helpful for anyone else who ,at experience this same thing. Just wish they had told us over the phone rather than having to drive 3 hours round trip to not even see a Dr! Oh well. I'm just glad she is ok. It is almost funny though. Looks like she has a frisbee in her mouth. She looks like a cartoon!! Poor girl! Thanks for your concern and for checking in on her! :)

my golden LOVES chasing bees and everytime he gets stung he swells really bad and itches. We just throw the cone of shame on him and give him some benedryl. I hope your baby starts feeling better!

kElJoY --- 12 years ago -

WELL???? How's the little beast doing?? Better I hope!!!

FYI the Banning Veterinary Hospital has a vet on call 24/7 and is much cheaper than VCA in Indio and about the same distance to drive. Heard lots of good things about them and even Companion rec'ds them for after hours emergencies.
