5 gallon tank with only 2 goldfish in it - no heater; does have a filter. All of a sudden the water became cloudy last night when we used some new kind of granular food.

What do we do to get it uncloudy short of changing the water completely out?? Isn't there some chemical you can buy for that?

Also, can you put real plants in the water if there is no heater?

No, I did not google - figured there were some experts on the 29PUG.

I'm guessing its a fresh water tank???

KelJoY II --- 14 years ago -

Yes.

CaNdYcAnE --- 14 years ago -

Ok so maybe they were over fed or over hmmm... well pooped. Lol you can do a 30-50% water change or add a teaspoon of salt. It should clear up in 24 hours. Do not feed the fish again until the water Is clear.

I heard that this works Crystal Clear but I don't have any fish or a tank so I can't give you my first hand experience on it

CaNdYcAnE --- 14 years ago -

How often do you vacuum your tank??

KelJoY II --- 14 years ago -

I'm going with the overfed. My SSSHH had fed them and I didn't realize it until after I fed them again!

CaNdYcAnE --- 14 years ago -

What lines the bottom of your tank??

KelJoY II --- 14 years ago -

How often do you vacuum your tank??

Vacuum lol? Never. We just got it this last week.

KelJoY II --- 14 years ago -

What lines the bottom of your tank??

That was the other thing - we just put the aquarium rocks in last night too along with some plastic plants.

KelJoY II --- 14 years ago -

Yeah! That's it - I knew I had heard of something before.

CaNdYcAnE --- 14 years ago -

Lol ok so ill come by n give you a few tips next week. I have a 150 gal tank in my kitchen. We are kinda experts at this point . Lol

CaNdYcAnE --- 14 years ago -

Oh Kel, yeah you have to give your tank time to stabilize itself. If its still cloudy in 24 hours call me. Don't add anything else to it.

CoachLover --- 14 years ago -

kel hubs said he forgot to add in the water cleaner thingy. we can drop it off to you on monday too. that should help it

RaeRie (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

I have a goldfish you can have in a few weeks, lol.

Megan B. --- 14 years ago -

Ok didn't read anyones response but.... a 5 gl. tank is too small for 2 goldfish. Goldfish are one of the dirtiest fish you can own. They need around 10 gl. a piece with awesome filtration, and frequent partial water changes (15-20% every other week). Plus you should have the tank set up with the correct chemicals in it for at least a week before adding any fish in it.

KelJoY II --- 14 years ago -

Ok - tank is good now!! Thanks for the all the help!

jeanne --- 14 years ago -

I now have 12 tanks in the house but for goldfish, I have 3 ponds outsde. If you are in a bind ever and When folks are moving, there is the problem of packing up the tank but no way to take the fish so I have been taking them the last few years.. need a home for fish, I do take them in..no fee, no charge, just a home for them. Ok. FINALLY got a 10 gallon tank for the 6 fishies.....actually scored 2 10 gallon tanks with a bag of tank rocks along with a new filter AND hood w/light for $10 for all. SCORE

So - do you have to have chemicals for gold fish?? The 5 gallon tank has been just fine and I only had to use the cleaner stuff once. It started getting cloudy again today so I put more in it - I think the water is ready to be changed though some - or the filter. Will be working on transferring all to a 10 gallon tank over the weekend.

Experts?

CaNdYcAnE --- 14 years ago -

Mix water from the old tank to the new tank.

KelJoY II --- 14 years ago -

That I remember. What about any chemicals though? Haven't used any yet except for the clear stuff when it got muddy looking.

CaNdYcAnE --- 14 years ago -

I would get the tester kit, n chemicals just in case, but we rarely use them.

CoachLover --- 14 years ago -

kel its probably the filter, and changed half of the water out and put in the neutralizer thingy. i believe its 5 drops.

KelJoY II --- 14 years ago -
